Flooring
If you want flooring that is easy to maintain, opt for porcelain or glazed tiles. Although porous natural stone tiles look very pretty, many such tiles will stain over time.
Floors with a textured finish such as matte or sand-containing glazes are best for a non-slip surface. This is ideal if you have young children, or older adults who may be more prone to a fall in the shower or bathroom area. A textured finish is very effective and will look great for many years to come!
There is also resin-based flooring that is effective and comes in many different colors. Plus, you don't have to seal / reseal this type of flooring. The resin-based flooring has a pleasant beauty to it, but, admittedly, it is not as elegant as natural stones.
Consider Height
For those family members who are tall, this is very important to consider when remodeling your bathroom. You will want to make sure that new upgrades are placed at a height that is comfortable for everyone. When needed, you can have the sink counter and/or vanity raised, and you can also do the same with the showerhead(s). In addition, you can also give your bathroom the look of more space by opting to install frameless showers.
Opt for Niches
Shower niches are tile cuts that you can "carve out" to create a nice storage area to put your soaps, shampoos, conditioners, razors, etc., in. These can save you a lot of room and usable space versus the bulky (and sometimes difficult) overhead shower "organizers" that are sold at most general merchandise stores. A shower niche also offers a more elegant touch to your bathroom. To save money, always plan for a bit of additional extra tiles, or, when available, just use any leftover pieces (from the tile work) to make your niche(s). For smaller kids, you can also have a shower niche put in at knee height so they can have a place to hold their shower toiletries, as well.
Sink with a Vanity
A combination sink and vanity will typically take up a little more room, but will go a long way to help keep your bathroom organized. Of course, always measure to be sure that drawers and door(s) can open and close without issue. Another option is to install a vessel sink that sits on top of a pedestal or vanity. Utilizing a vessel sink is unique and really adds to the overall look and feel of your bathroom. There are many great options to choose from, but, as always, it all depends on the size of your bathroom and what best suits your needs and desires.
The Right Countertop
For countertops, you can certainly choose to use natural stone, but that is typically more expensive. Plus, this type of stone usually requires more maintenance than others. In addition, you need to keep it in mind that this type of countertop will stain very easily if you do not wipe up spills immediately.
Laminate is yet another affordable option, but realize that it cannot be used for under-mount sinks, and often looks like, well, laminate!
We hope these tips will help you with your bathroom renovations!
