Are you getting a new glass shower enclosure installed in your bathroom? Maybe you've recently had one installed. Whatever the case may be, you are probably wondering what it is going to take on your part to keep that glass sparkly, shiny and looking new? Here are six things that can be done by homeowners to keep their glass shower enclosures looking fantastic:
1. Prep with a Fabric Softener Sheet
Fabric softener sheets can help eliminate the buildup of soft soap scum and work to loosen other buildup and hard-to-remove stains. Simply take a sheet and apply it to the glass and scrub. Once you've scrubbed the entire glass, or the specific areas where the stains and soap scum build-up were, you can use tap water or even a vinegar and dish detergent mixture (below) and a squeegee to finish removing the build-up and stains.
2. Apply a Vinegar (or Baking Soda) and Dish Detergent Mixture
You can also slay soap scum by using a half-and-half mixture of grease-cutting dish detergent and distilled vinegar. However, if you have a stone shower, you'll want to omit the vinegar and use baking soda. With the baking soda, the final consistency of the mixture will actually be frosting-like. In either case, you can use a non-scratch sponge and scrub the glass shower enclosure with it.
3. Clean with a Citrus Solution
Another excellent cleaning solution for glass shower enclosures is one that consists of baking soda and a lemon. You'll want to cut the lemon in half and have a bowl of baking soda nearby. You will then dip the lemon half in the baking soda and rub it directly on the shower glass. You can then use lemon oil on the glass to help repel water so that the soap will not dry on the glass near as much as before.
4. Get Out the WD-40
WD-40 has so many excellent uses, and most of them you have probably never realized. This is true in this instance, as it can be used effectively to keep glass shower enclosures sparkly and clean. Believe it or not, you can use it on wet or dry glass. All you need to do is spray it on generously and wipe it clean with a clean, lint-free, dry towel to remove calcium deposits, soap scum, dirt, grime and more. This may take more than one application, and, as with using any chemicals in a small space, be sure that you open a window and provide plenty of ventilation while using this approach.
5. Start Multi-Tasking While in the Shower
You're already in the shower, so why not make even better use of the time and clean the shower door? The warm water and the steam from the hot water has already helped loosen up any soap scum and grime, so you can easily use a foam cleaning pad or a sponge to wipe it down. This approach alleviates the need for cleaning chemicals or related products.
6. Use a Squeegee After Showering
The best method that you can use to keep your glass shower enclosure perfectly clean and spotless is to use a squeegee on the glass after every use. The easiest way to do this is to keep a squeegee in the bathroom near the shower. By doing this consistently, you'll be able to prevent the build-up of hard-water deposits, which means less scrubbing later on.
